Choosing the right RC transmitter + receiver for the AI Grand Prix DIY 5" racer • Ctrl+P to save as PDF

Why do you need an RC controller for an autonomous drone? Safety. Your drone MUST have a manual override so you can take control instantly if the AI misbehaves. The RC transmitter lets you arm/disarm, switch between Stabilized (manual) and Offboard (autonomous) modes, and — critically — trigger a kill switch that cuts all motors immediately. The competition Neros Archer has this built into the DCL platform. Your DIY practice drone needs you to provide it.

1. What you need from an RC system

Requirements for autonomous drone dev

ProtocolExpressLRS (ELRS) 2.4GHz
Why ELRSOpen source, low latency (~2ms), long range, cheap receivers (~$15), massive community
ChannelsMinimum 8 (sticks + 3 switches)
Switches needed3: Arm, Flight Mode, Kill
FirmwareEdgeTX (open source, configurable)
Receiver outputCRSF → Pixhawk 6C RC IN port

Switch assignments for PX4

RC switch mapping SW A Arm / Disarm 2-pos toggle, easy reach SW B Flight mode 3-pos: Stabilized / Position / Offboard SW C Kill switch 2-pos momentary — cuts ALL motors
Kill switch is non-negotiable. A 5" racer at full throttle can cause serious injury. The kill switch must be reachable without looking.

5. Setup steps

1 — BIND

Bind transmitter to receiver

Put receiver into bind mode (hold button while powering on). On the transmitter, go to EdgeTX model setup and start ELRS bind. LED on receiver goes solid = bound.

# EdgeTX: Model Setup → Internal RF → CRSF → Bind
# Receiver LED: flashing = searching, solid = bound
2 — WIRE

Connect receiver to Pixhawk

Solder or plug 3 wires from receiver to Pixhawk RC IN port:

RX padPixhawk RC IN pinColor
5VPin 1 (VCC)Red
GNDPin 6 (GND)Black
TX (CRSF out)Pin 3 (RX)Signal
Only the RX's TX pad connects to Pixhawk. CRSF is bidirectional on one wire. The receiver transmits channel data on its TX pad, and the Pixhawk receives it on the RC IN RX pin.
3 — CONFIGURE PX4

Set up RC in QGroundControl

# Parameters:
RC_INPUT_PROTO = CRSF

# Calibrate: Vehicle Setup → Radio → move all sticks to extremes

# Flight modes: Vehicle Setup → Flight Modes
# Channel 5 (SW A) → Arm/Disarm
# Channel 6 (SW B) → Stabilized / Position / Offboard
# Channel 7 (SW C) → Kill Switch
#
# Kill switch: Parameters → COM_KILL_DISARM = 0 (never auto-disarm)
# Set to a dedicated 2-pos switch
4 — TEST

Verify (NO props!)

For the AI Grand Prix DIY racer, the RadioMaster Pocket ELRS ($60) + HappyModel EP2 ($15) = $75 total is the right call. It has enough switches for arm/mode/kill, runs EdgeTX for full configuration, and the 100mW ELRS range is more than sufficient for a practice drone you're flying within visual line of sight. Save your budget for the Jetson and camera — that's where it matters.
